A Very Special Christmas, Vol. 2(more) »rank: 723by: Various Artists
Our review:Album Details:Second Volume of this Landmark Christmas Collection. Green Cover Art. :The follow up to the original, this collection in many ways surpasses the initial effort. Duets seem to rule here, with Cyndi Lauper and Frank Sinatra double teaming on 'Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,' while the irrepressible Ronnie Spector shares the mic with Darlene Love for a resplendent 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree,' and Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson give 'Blue Christmas' a steamy and sizzling once-over. Vanessa Williams stops the disc, though, with her simple yet stunning rendition of 'What Child Is This.' The then-sign-of-the-times inclusion, Michael Bolton, ... Detail |

Let It Be Christmas(more) »rank: 860by: Alan Jackson
Our review: :Unlike 1993's classic Honky Tonk Christmas, which was almost entirely original tunes, 10 of these 11 tracks are well-known holiday favorites. But one of the highlights of that 1993 release was Jackson's cover of Burl Ives's very familiar 'Holly Jolly Christmas,' which he subsequently made his own. Jackson's warm, soothing voice also works wonders here, with the arrangements doing their part to transform this into yet another yuletide classic. In fact, 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' is one of the most touching versions ever recorded. Be it a semi-jazzy 'Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,' the honky-tonk piano on a ... Detail |

Our review:Album Description:Christian music's favorite songwriting duo, Shane & Shane releases its first-ever Christmas record, Glory In The Highest (A Christmas Record) this holiday season. Recorded at Shane & Shane's Spaceway Studios, the album, produced by Jason Hoard (Fee), also marks the twosome's mix and engineering debut. Takk...(more) »rank: 1315by: Sigur Rós
Our review: :Just when this Icelandic crew seemed stuck in loud/soft/loud/ soft rut a la Mogwai or Godspeed You Black Emperor, they release their most beguiling, subtle and beautiful album yet. This album, allegedly the group's first sung in Icelandic rather than their own made-up 'Hopelandic' (not that this listener could tell the difference) is relentlessly joyous, unaffectedly rad and inventive but never just for its own sake. Strings hold an ever more prominent place in the music, and this is a good thing. Songs unfold slowly as usual, but they take unexpected turns as often as not. The brilliant 'Glósóli' burbles with ... Detail |

Christmas Island(more) »rank: 482by: Jimmy Buffett
Our review: :It never snows in the Florida Keys, but as every Parrothead knows, Jimmy Buffett was born on Christmas Day 1946. His Caribbean folk tunes have always had a festive air to them, and his Coral Reefer Band tackle these holiday songs in their usual laidback style. Buffett turns out both traditional carols ('Jingle Bells' with a few tropical ad-libs) and his own myth-building originals ('A Sailor's Christmas,' 'Merry Christmas, Alabama'). This may not be the traditional Christmas fare of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, but for those who enjoy ocean breezes and 'wasting away' to this most successful beach bum, ... Detail |
