Canciones de Mi Padre(more) »rank: 2257by: Linda Ronstadt
Our review: :Topflight pop singer pays tribute to her heritage on this amazing roots ranchera album that also features excellent backing by the world-famous Mariachi Vargas, all under the experienced hand of master arranger-composer-producer Ruben Fuentes. Everything clicks wonderfully here, but numbers that set a new standard include 'Tu Solo Tu,' an incredibly harmonic love ode; 'Por un Amor,' on the price of real love; and 'Los Laureles,' a song of declaration on which Ronstadt soars unbelievably high. These are old Mexican classics, played by arguably the world's best mariachi group and sung by one of North America's greatest vocal talents. Extras include performances by ... Detail |
The Best of Bollywood(more) »rank: 7550by: Various Artists
Our review: :Now that Bollywood (Bombay-plus-Hollywood--an affectionate nickname for India's terrifyingly productive film industry) has finally gone mainstream in the West (Bride and Prejudice, Monsoon Wedding), many American listeners are curious to know more about the genre's extremely busy soundtrack singers. Club-goers are already primed by Bhangra nights, but for the uninitiated, the high-pitched female voices, loosey-goosey chorales, and wild-and-wooly instrumentals may take some getting used to. However, anyone willing to make the effort will be quickly rewarded. This compilation is a great place to start as it is well-produced and fairly typical of the genre at its best. Among the male singers, Kishore Kumar ... Detail |

Gently Weeps(more) »rank: 2287by: Jake Shimabukuro
Our review: :You'll forget all the Tiny Tim, Don Ho, and Hawaiian-music jokes about the ukulele when you hear Gently Weeps, which leaves behind the Roaring Twenties strum and plinky-dink sound of most such music. Jake Shimabukuro sets the tone with the lead-off track from which he takes the album's title, George Harrison's 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps,' unfolding the vulnerable undertow of Harrison's epic lament. A string of covers follows, as Shimabukuro touches the serene with Schubert's 'Ave Maria,' evokes a Japanese koto on a Zen-like version of 'Sakura,' and turns 'The Star-Spangled Banner' into a lament. But Shimabukuro's original tunes are just as ... Detail |

Bob Marley and the Wailers Live at the Rainbow(more) »rank: 5645starring: Bob Marley & the Wailers
Our review: :Studio: Uni Dist Corp (music) Release Date: 11/15/2005 :On June 2, 1977, London's Rainbow Theatre 'caught fire'--in the best possible way, of course. At the time, Bob Marley and the Wailers, already huge in the UK, were on tour in support of the locally produced Exodus. While the show starts off with the slow-burning 'Trenchtown Rock' (1973's African Herbsman), Marley's performance grows increasingly incendiary until, by the time they get to the climactic closer, 'Exodus,' it looks as he's in another world entirely. The turning point is an extended version of 'Crazy Baldhead' (1976's Rastaman Vibration), in which Marley seemingly enters a ... Detail |

La Revancha del Tango(more) »rank: 2247by: Gotan Project
Our review:Album Description:The debut by this Paris based trio is a relaxed blend of tango dance rhythms and Argentinean instrumentation. The group was brought together by their passion to combine sound with image and to marry electronic and acoustic music. They built on their house, dub, and hip-hop influenced productions by adding two of Argentina's finest tango musicians, the musical result being supremely distinctive, incorporating bandonion (a form of accordion), violin, and vocals. This release includes 2000's most memorable jazz-house hit, 'Triptico', which has already sold over 400,000 copies worldwide. The US version features the original ten tracks from the European release, along with ... Detail |
