Amelie: Original Soundtrack Recording

(more) »rank: 1576

by: Yann Tiersen

Our review: :This sunny comic fable from idiosyncratic director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (City of Lost Children, Alien Resurrection, Delicatessen) boasts any number of intimate charms, not the least of which is Yann Tiersen's warmly inviting score. Composer and multi-instrumentalist Tiersen's work and training may have masterfully encompassed classical, pop, and rock, but his delightful Amélie music proves he is slave to none. In this, his fourth soundtrack, Tiersen displays an impressive command of idiom and melodic subtlety that's rightfully drawn comparisons to the great Nino Rota. With a Paris-set story driven by blossoming love, the composer frequently leans on the familiar Parisian street accordion ...

Introducing Hanggai

(more) »rank: 8316

by: Hanggai

Our review:Album Description:Downtown Beijing might seem a strange place for a Mongolian folk revival. Yet Hanggai are at the forefront of a musical movement in China that is finding inspiration in native folk traditions, drawing on a repertoire of magical songs that have all but disappeared during China's recent turbulent past.

Yael Naim

(more) »rank: 1691

by: Yael Naïm, David Donatien

Our review: :To begin with, this album was meant to focus solely on guitar and vocals. But little by little Yael and David Donatien, who encouraged her to sing in Hebrew, padded out the architecture and formed a team. Xavier Tribolet (drums), Laurent David (bass), Voed Nir (cello) and Julien Feltin (electric guitar) joined them as well as S.Husky Huskolds for the mix (Tom Waits, Fiona Apple, Me’Shell Ndegeocello). The instrumentation is pretty minimalist here yet incredibly colourful with the participation of the brass section, the Mellotron, the cello and some programming. Recorded in the young woman’s flat in Paris the 13 songs ...

Pebble to a Pearl

by: Nikka Costa

Our review:Album Description: The latest radiant gem by the gifted singer-songwriter and performer Nikka Costa -- is far and away her most direct and convincing musical statement yet. If this is Costa's most pleasing album to date -- and it clearly is -- then it's exactly because the woman singing to us so powerfully has finally found the creative freedom to first and foremost please herself.

Sparks of Ancient Light

by: Al Stewart

Our review:Album Description:Magical history tours have been Al Stewart's trademark since the early 1970s, when he switched from writing about his own romantic turmoil to a wider view of the world and its rich cast of characters and events. While his 1976 international hit single, 'Year of the Cat,' was tied to no specific time, the albums surrounding it combined finely drawn character studies and detailed settings that ranged across continents and centuries, forming the template of history mixed with mystery for Al's subsequent recordings. Everything changes with time - except basic human motivations. Sparks of Ancient Light, Al's latest collection of ...

Celtic Woman

(more) »rank: 5228

from: EMI Distribution

Our review: :Studio: Emi Music Distribution Release Date: 05/15/2006 :Gorgeous to listen to and gorgeous to look at, Celtic Woman is perfect PBS fare, sort of a Riverdance without the dancing. Drawing on the same New Age-y sound and propulsive energy as that show's solo-voice and choral numbers, the live concert features four attractive young women in strapless evening gowns with soaring voices backed by an orchestra, an Anuna-like chorus, and a large percussion section. The more traditional fare includes Méav Ni Mhaolchatha's 'Danny Boy' and 'She Moved Through the Fair,' and Chloë Agnew's 'Ave Maria' (the Bach-Gounod version). Movie and TV ...
