Best Of Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong(more) »rank: 3217by: Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong
Our review: essential recording:Ella Fitzgerald's voice was satin to Louis Armstrong's sandpaper, but when you put them together on a single song, their chemistry was unimpeachable. This disc selects highlights from the three albums they made together at Verve (including their Porgy and Bess), and adds a spiffy live track from the Hollywood Bowl. Though they don't harmonize much (Armstrong's voice wasn't built for harmony), Ella's dignified swing and flashes of teasing wit play off Satchmo's gritty, good-humored roar symbiotically. The material is mostly lightweight Tin Pan Alley stuff (lots of Gershwin, plus the likes of 'I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm'), ... Detail |
Mamma Mia! 5th Anniversary [CD/DVD Combination](more) »rank: 3847from: Decca Broadway
Our review: :The Mama Mia! 5th Anniversary Edition includes a CD reissue of the original London cast recording, with a 'making of' feature, tour highlights, and cast recollections on DVD. Amazon.com:Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed ... Detail |

The Very Best of John Coltrane(more) »rank: 3478by: John Coltrane
Our review: :With his inexhaustible technique, trademark sound, and limitless imagination, tenor and soprano saxophonist John Coltrane was one of jazz's most dominant musicians. This collection covers his important Atlantic Records sessions recorded from 1959 to 1960 (chronicled in their entirety on Heavyweight Champion). The tunes signal an important transitional phase from Trane's stints with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk to his emergence as a leader in his own right. 'Giant Steps' 'Naima,' and 'Cousin Mary'--featuring pianist Tommy Flanagan and drummer Art Taylor--crystallized Trane's supersonic 'sheets of sound' style. 'Like Sonny,' an Afro-Latin dedication to his friend and contemporary Sonny Rollins with Wynton Kelly on ... Detail |

As I Am(more) »rank: 791by: Kristin Chenoweth
Our review: :Television viewers know her as The West Wing's opinionated deputy press secretary Annabeth Schott, while Broadway aficionados are familiar with her Tony-winning work in Wicked and the revival of You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, as well as the successful 2001 American Songbook anthology, Let Yourself Go. But on this eclectic collection of traditional and contemporary gospel anthems and related songs, songstress Kristen Chenoweth claims a bold return to her spiritual roots. Her chameleonic, crystalline soprano lights up the beloved title track standard and the Gaither's modern inspirationals 'Because He Lives' and 'Upon This Rock' with a deft, Broadway-bred sense of drama. Yet ... Detail |
The Essential Tony Bennett (Rm) (2CD)(more) »rank: 4159by: Tony Bennett
Our review: :Tony Bennett has a typical lack of effusiveness about the kudos of his seven-decade career, but he does reportedly display an inscribed picture from a longtime colleague and fellow saloon singer in his Manhattan apartment. It reads: 'To the best goddamned pop singer I've ever heard.' It's signed 'Frank Sinatra.' But don't take the Chairman's word for it. Just listen as these two discs bound from one masterly performance to the next, documenting a career whose ups and downs--Bennett actually went long years without a record contract--belie a robust evolution of vocal strength and subtlety of phrasing. The arc of Bennett's art in ... Detail |

The Secret Garden (1991 Original Broadway Cast)(more) »rank: 5324by: Lucy Simon, Marsha Norman, Rebecca Luker, Daisy Eagan
Our review: :Inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel of the same name, The Secret Garden was set apart from the beginning by the composition of its creative team. Not many Broadway shows can boast a female composer (Lucy Simon), director (Susan H. Schulman), librettist/lyricist (Marsha Norman), and producer/set designer (Heidi Landesman)--not to mention an 11-year old (Daisy Eagan) in the lead. This story of a little girl who helps her grieving uncle and sickly cousin regain a taste for life is a delicate, lovely achievement. Steeped in moody Victoriana, it should enchant those who enjoy a more understated style of musical theater. The great cast ... Detail |
