Annie (1977 Original Broadway Cast)(more) »rank: 2324from: Sony
Our review: :The original Broadway cast recording of Annie still has as much charm as it did in 1977. Charles Strouse wrote the snappy music and Martin Charnin's clever lyrics capture the misery of the Great Depression, the glitter of the upper-crust life, and the character of the FDR administration. Andrea McArdle shines in the title role, most notably with the classic anthem 'Tomorrow,' while Tony-winner Dorothy Loudon and Reid Shelton provide support as the hag Miss Hannigan and the benevolent Daddy Warbucks, respectively. The 1998 remastered edition includes as bonus material 17 minutes of tape Strouse and Charnin recorded for backers' auditions ... Detail |
Rent (2005 Movie Soundtrack)(more) »rank: 1907by: Jonathan Larson, Rosario Dawson, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Jesse L. Martin, Anthony Rapp, Tracie Thoms
Our review:Album Description:One of the longest-running shows (since 1996) in the history of Broadway, and one of its most beloved, RENT was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Based on Puccini's classic opera 'La Boheme,' Jonathan Larson's revolutionary rock opera tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic in New York's gritty East Village. Now the powerful musical marks its 10th year on stage by coming to the big screen, accompanied by RENT The Motion Picture Soundtrack, ... Detail |

Smooth Jazz Christmas(more) »rank: 2615by: Dave Koz & Friends
Our review: :Cohesiveness is what separates this all-star Christmas release from the others. During the last four years, Dave Koz, vocalist Brenda Russell, pianist David Benoit, guitarist Peter White, and trumpeter Rick Braun have hit the road spreading holiday cheer among the smooth-jazz masses and their collaborative ease is palpable throughout these 14 tracks. Benoit is featured on 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing,' while Koz adds one of his best solos. Braun has the spotlight on 'Little Drummer Boy,' where Benoit shines too, and White highlights 'Silent Night.' All five players are credited for arrangements on most tracks, the craftiest of which is ... Detail |
Merry 1940's Christmas(more) »rank: 1255by: Various Artists
Our review:Album Description:Christmas always has been and always will be an important holiday, but during the ’40s it took on a special meaning. For some, it meant the cessation of hostilities and a chance for a good meal; for others, it was the time of the year when the pangs for a missing loved one were particularly acute. Rent (1996 Original Broadway Cast)(more) »rank: 1693by: Jeff Potter, Anthony Jackson, Daniel A. Weiss, Ira Siegel, Kenny Brescia, Steve Skinner, Adam Pascal, Aiko Nakasone, Anthony Rapp
Our review: :Into Broadway's creative vacuum of revivals, movie adaptations, and Hollywood star vehicles comes Rent, the story of squatters, junkies, performance artists, struggling musicians, drag queens, aspiring filmmakers, and HIV-positives (and you thought Miss Saigon's helicopter landing was cool). Undoubtedly among the defining pop cultural events of 1996, Rent has already won four Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. More importantly, it threatens to bring substance back to the Great White Way. Transposing Puccini's 100-year-old opera La Bohème into modern day Bohemia (19th-century Paris's Left Bank becomes late-20th-century New York's East Village where the scourge of tuberculosis becomes the plague ... A New Day Has Come(more) »rank: 5708by: Celine Dion
Our review: :This has the best song which Celine has ever sung :Doubters who expect little from Celine Dion but turgid ballads will be surprised by her return to recording after several years. On A New Day Has Come, the big production numbers most associated with the Canadian superstar's name ('My Heart Will Go On,' 'Because You Loved Me') are evoked by the two versions of 'I Surrender' and somewhat lifeless covers of 'At Last' and 'Nature Boy.' At the same time, though, Dion shows her willingness to stretch on the classic-house homage 'Sorry for Love' and the unavoidably catchy 'Right in ... Detail |
