Our review: :Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Our review: :Jesus Christ Superstar has been the definitive rock musical ever since its 1972 stage premiere in London. Revived to great acclaim in the late 1990s, it has everything you'd expect from a blockbuster: great songs, strong characterization, and, crucially, a cracking good story. This release is based on the 1998 London production (also available on video and DVD). For the revival, director Gale Edwards pulls few punches in her efforts to draw a modern interpretation from a gifted cast. Pilate's cronies are sinister Darth Vader look-alikes. Our review: :James Woods and the New London Chamber Chorus and Chamber Ensemble provide a performance of Stravinsky's Les Noces--considered by many to be the composer's finest work--that is careful and well balanced, even if it never reaches the Apollonian sublimity of Bardon Eötvös's recording. And it's wonderful to hear engaging renditions of lesser-known vocal music by the composer, including the Four Russian Peasant Songs and several Slavonic works.
