Rodrigo y Gabriela (with Bonus DVD)(more) »rank: 685by: Rodrigo y Gabriela
Our review:Album Description:The sleeve photo of a crocodile's eye with a faint image of Rodrigo and Gabriela superimposed, suits the artists' desire for something which didn't shout 'Mexican guitarists' or 'Couples.' 'It reminded us of Tamacun, the famous Mexican eccentric who is in Ixtapa where we lived for a while'. Tamacun -'Tamacun's message is to teach kids to respect nature.' He handles crocodiles, and tourists come to photograph him. Diablo Rojo - Inspired by a wild rollercoaster called 'Red Devil' at a theme park in Copenhagen, Denmark. Three rides in a row, each. Viking Man - Another Danish inspired piece. The Viking Man was ... Detail |
La Vida... Es un Ratico(more) »rank: 1013by: Juanes
Our review: :La Vida...Es un Ratico (Life is a moment) is the follow up to Juanes' globally multi-platinum release Mi Sangre. In La Vida...Es un Ratico, Juanes once again teams up with co-producer Gustavo Santaolalla, Double-Oscar/Grammy winner. In his first single 'Me Enamora,' Juanes shows us his intimate personal thoughts on love and relationships. In songs like 'Minas Piedras' and Bandera de Manos' he tackles themes of both the hope for peace and social change. With this release, Juanes works to continue to perfect his distinctive fusion of rock with traditional Colombian rhythms and other international styles. Despues del exito de 'Mi Sangre', Juanes nos ... Detail |

Live in Japan(more) »rank: 1173by: Rodrigo y Gabriela
Our review:Album Description:Two CD set. Rodrigo (Sanchez) and Gabriela (Quintero) are two fast-fingered, Dublin-based, Mexicans with a unique sound created on acoustic guitars. Their music is difficult to define, straddling both World and Rock, and often imbued with timeless Hispano classical influences. The fire in it comes from their life-long passion for Metal music. Rodrigo y Gabriela beat both the Arctic Monkeys and Johnny Cash to #1 in the Irish charts upon its orginal release in Europe. Rodridgo Y Gabriela are one of the world's most celebrated and captivating touring and live acts having sold out classic venues such as The Roundhouse and Shepard's ... Detail |
Getz/Gilberto(more) »rank: 1118by: Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto
Our review: essential recording:Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remains the only jazz album to reach number one in the pop charts. In fact, the story goes that Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto since the company did not want to compete with its own hit; it was a good thing he did. Getz/Gilberto, which featured composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, not only ... Detail |

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Greatest Hits(more) »rank: 2790by: Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66
Our review: :A bridge between bossa nova and 1960s pop, Sergio Mendes' music was easy listening, vaguely psychedelic pop, light jazz, and bossa nova all rolled into one. Mendes and Brasil '66 (which featured Mendes on keyboards and a revolving cast of two female vocalists, bass, guitar, drums and percussion) had a number of hits from the mid-'60s to the early-1970s that are included here. Getting his professional start playing and arranging for Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, Mendes typically filled out his proper albums with updated versions of popular songs written by the Brazilian masters as well as some of his own tunes ... Un Dia(more) »rank: 2877by: Juana Molina
Our review: :The fifth release from Argentinean artist Molina is a brave departure from her previous work. It's every bit as personal and intimate, but pronounced with rhythms and with bold low end added to the mix. A hypnotic record, restless, alive with melodies that surface imperceptibly before burrowing into your brain. The tracks are informed by an ever-shifting and polymorphous sense of groove. The rhythms flow over and inside each other, played out on wood and cymbal and bombo leguero, and woven from electronic glitches. David Byrne, NPR, and The NY Times are some of her many supporters. The Ultimate Yma Sumac Collection(more) »rank: 4360by: Yma Sumac
Our review: :In 1950, at the dawn of an era of musical exotica (in which composers such as Esquivel, Martin Denny, and Les Baxter would test the limits of hi-fi strangeness), Yma Sumac entered the scene. She was a diva from the Andes with a four-vocal octave range, an unrelenting trill, and great looks, and she became an overnight sensation. Within years of her debut LP, Voice of the Xtabay, Sumac recorded more concept albums, starred in a Broadway musical (Flahooley), and appeared onscreen with Charlton Heston in 1954's Secret of the Incas. Truth be told, exotica music's popularity was short-lived (only to resurface again ... Detail |
On a Starry Night(more) »rank: 2373by: Various Artists
Our review: :The party line on most Windham Hill products seems to be that it's either the greatest stuff since wave machines, or that it all sounds alike. On a Starry Night, with its collection of world songs and reputable artists such as Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and others, does lean toward a seamlessly understated, homogeneous quality that is broken only occasionally by Bobby McFerrin's piece and a couple of others. That said, there can hardly be a more mellow or sonorous album of kid's music anywhere. Starry Night could calm a nursery with no nurses; why, it could even ... Detail |

Novas Bossas(more) »rank: 2503by: Milton Nascimento, Jobim Trio
Our review:Album Description:2008 release. Tom Jobim was the originator of the new Bossa Nova beat in Brazil in the late '50s and it was Joao Gilberto that first mastered the guitar technique to introduce it to the world in 1958. They both said that Milton Nascimento was the only singer that could reach the original pitch of the compositions and so it is entirely fitting that he has teamed up here with Tom's son Paulo and grandson Daniel for a recording session to celebrate both Tom Jobim and the anniversary of his invention of the Bossa Nova. Mixing songs by Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento ... Detail |
