Our review: :Sonically relentless and visually groundbreaking only begin to describe the Tool experience. Formed in Los Angeles, CA in 1990, Tool has cemented themselves in today's hard music community with uncompromising attitude and vision. With just one EP and three album releases over a 15-year span, Tool has created a loyal and even rabid fan base, selling over 10 million albums and half a million videos in the U.S. alone. Traced In Air (Ltd. Edition)

(more) »rank: 1221

by: Cynic

Our review:Album Description:Traced in Air is the second full-length album by the progressive/technical death metal fusion band Cynic. It is the first album since their 1993 debut Focus. Cynic disbanded during the fall of 1994 while working on the album. In January 17, 2008 Cynic resumed musical activity and Paul Masvidal said he wanted to complete the project after the Reunion Tour. It was originally believed that Cynic would be working with Jason Suecof of Capharnaum fame. However, Warren Riker (Down's producer) is working with the band. Tymon Kruidenier was then announced as replacement for Senescu. Kruidenier will also be handling the death growls ...

The Spirit Of Radio: Greatest Hits 1974-1987

by: Rush

Our review:Album Description:Japanese edition of 2003 compilation includes an exclusive bonus disc with two tracks, 'What You're Doing' (Live) & 'A Passage To Bangkok' (Live). 18 tracks. Atlantic. :Though not their first-ever career survey, Rush's Spirit of Radio compilation is an ideal point of entry for newbie fans or anyone who consistently likes the Rush songs most often heard on commercial radio. While 1990's Chronicles set was more encompassing--including tracks beyond Spirit of Radio's '87 cut-off point--the Canadian prog-rock trio's benchmark moments are represented among these 16 songs. Hence the appearance of 'Closer to the Heart,' 'Tom Sawyer,' 'New World Man,' 'Time Stand Still,' ...

Permanent Waves

by: Rush

Our review: essential recording:One of Rush's finest moments, second only to Moving Pictures. This album includes two classic songs, 'The Spirit of Radio' (which has one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in all of rock) and 'Freewill.' There's also the epic-feeling 'Jacob's Ladder,' as well as 'Entre Nous,' a sort of intellectual love song (if such a thing can be said to exist). The introspective 'Different Strings' and the anthemic 'Natural Science' (which clocks in at over nine minutes) close the album. Though there are only six songs on Permanent Waves, it's enough; the material is rich enough that more of it would ...

The Roundhouse Tapes: Opeth Live

(more) »rank: 5151

starring: Opeth

Our review:Album Description:Since their formation in 1990, Opeth has risen to the forefront of the metal world; bringing many aspects of progressive Rock/Metal to a whole new audience by combining soft acoustic ambience with complex, melodic & heavy guitars, perfectly concocted into a completely peerless sound. This 2 DVD set contains a captivating Opeth performance from the Camden Roundhouse, London in 2006. It shows the band in scintillating form playing a selection of classics from their illustrious career. The Roundhouse Tapes was filmed during the band's Ghost Reveries tour.

Hemispheres

by: Rush

Our review: :Smart rockers Rush were just on the brink of being embraced by the album rock mainstream when they recorded Hemispheres. Already wildly popular with a certain corner of the intellectual crowd, thanks in part to drummer Neil Peart's Ayn Rand obsession, this CD marked a turning point for the Canadian trio. Hemispheres explores the political, social economic, and sci-fi themes prevalent on their early work, continuing the saga of 'Cygnus' from A Farewell To Kings. Rush was fond of writing in movements, almost orchestrally, rather than the typical verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure, and Hemispheres has the usual opus-like compositions that perfectly displayed their chops. The ...
