Live at Leeds(more) »rank: 2551by: The Who
Our review:Album Description:Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) pressing of this classic rock album. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008. essential recording:Anyone who owned the vinyl copy of Live at Leeds will barely recognize its digitized namesake. While the 1970 record offered a mere six selections, the 1995 CD reissue is fleshed out with a full 14 tracks. Reveling in the augmented Leeds prompts one to wonder why in the name of 'Heaven and Hell' they didn't put out a double record in the first place. No ... Detail |
The Allman Brothers at Fillmore East(more) »rank: 1407by: The Allman Brothers Band
Our review: essential recording:There has never been a better showcase for improvisational rock than this 1971 concert recording, and few (if any) live rock albums are in its rank. With only two studio albums (and plenty of touring) under their belt, the Georgia sextet tore into the Fillmore East with road-tested buoyancy. Titanic guitarist Duane Allman was at the peak of his powers, pushing his foil, Dickey Betts, to unsurpassed peaks. Vocalist-keyboardist Gregg Allman would have been a star in any other setting; here he's merely one more component in a brilliant ensemble. Duane Allman died shortly after At Fillmore East shipped, and the ... Detail |

Hell Freezes Over(more) »rank: 1429by: Eagles
Our review:Album Description:Japanese only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD - playable on all CD players) pressing. Universal. 2008. :Indeed, there were many who thought that it would take an event as cataclysmic as the one described in the album title to get these seminal '70s soft-rockers back together. But here they are, revisiting some of their most beloved tunes as well as four new ones, on this mostly live, largely acoustic disc. Frey, Henley, Walsh, Schmit, and Felder tackle iconic Eagles standards like 'Hotel California,' 'Tequila Sunrise,' 'Take It Easy,' 'Desperado,' and 'Life in the Fast Lane' and new tunes like 'Get Over It' ... Live: 1975-85 (3CD)(more) »rank: 1253by: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
Our review: :To say that Springsteen's live shows with the E Street Band were legendary is the height of understatement. On a good night, the set might extend to three and four hours of exhilarating, pulse-pounding rock & roll. How best to capture that on CD? Or was it possible at all? As it turns out, Live 1975-1985 comes as close to the experience as possible. Culling material from various tours and settings ranging from small rooms to stadiums, the three-CD set emphatically displays Springsteen's charisma as a bandleader and storyteller and makes plain the sheer power of the E Street Band. Some of the ... Detail |

Frampton Comes Alive!(more) »rank: 1377by: Peter Frampton
Our review: :If you were challenged to name five rock albums that epitomized the '70s, Frampton Comes Alive! should probably top the list. Former Humble Pie guitarist Peter Frampton recorded a few perfectly fine albums with his band Frampton's Camel, but it wasn't until some of those tracks were recorded at a live performance in San Francisco and released as Frampton Comes Alive! that he became a household name. Buoyant pop, sentimental ballads, arena rock--this album has it all. The double-LP package set sales records and contained three bona fide radio hits ('Baby, I Love Your Way,' 'Show Me the Way,' and 'Do You Feel ... Detail |
Unplugged(more) »rank: 2813by: Eric Clapton
Our review: : Eric Clapton Merchandise Amazon.com:Clapton caught the 'unplugged' trend just at the right time, when the public was hungry to hear how well rock stars and their material can hold up when stripped of elaborate production values. Clapton himself seemed baffled by the phenomenon, especially when picking up the armload of Grammys Unplugged earned him, including Record and Song of the Year for 'Tears in Heaven,' the heart-rending elegy to his young son, Conor. That song and a reworked version of 'Layla' got most of the attention, but the rest of the album has fine versions of acoustic blues numbers such as 'Malted ... Detail |

4 Way Street(more) »rank: 2575by: Crosby Stills Nash & Young
Our review: :This is one of those albums where you'll want to cherry-pick favorites. Recorded live when the supergroup was at its commercial zenith, it's sloppy in spots where precision is called for. And the hyperbolic counterculture rants sound a bit silly these days (Bellows Stills: 'Jesus Christ was the first nonviolent revolutionary! Ah, dig it, dig it!'). On the other hand, the electric jams are enlivened by some charged guitar skirmishes between Stills and Young. Those who owned the original 2-record set will be pleased by the additional Graham Nash song ('King Midas in Reverse') and Young's acoustic 'The Loner'/'Cinnamon Girl'/'Down by the River' ... Band Of Gypsys(more) »rank: 3137by: Jimi Hendrix
Our review: essential recording:Tired of the showboating image that his early live performances had saddled him with--and that his black audience viewed as demeaning and degrading to his musical talent--Hendrix dissolved his Experience in 1969 in search of a more terra-firma-grounded, blues-oriented persona. On New Year's Eve, Hendrix, his old Army buddy bassist Billy Cox, and ex-Electric Flag drummer Buddy Miles performed a loose, jam-filled set at New York's Fillmore East (completists will want the panoramic though uneven Live at the Fillmore East). Released a few months after his New Year's Eve 1970 concert, Band of Gypsys underscored Hendrix's desired return to basics--even if ... Detail |
