Buena Vista Social Club At Carnegie Hall(2 CD)(more) »rank: 497by: Buena Vista Social Club
Our review: :The landmark Buena Vista Social Club concert at Carnegie Hall-July 1, 1998-was both the start of a remarkable story and the culmination of a dream. This one-time-only event elevated veteran Cuban performers like Ibrahim Ferrer, Ruben Gonzalez, Compay Segundo and Omara Portuondo to long-overdue status as international stars, and it transformed the BVSC's already critically acclaimed album into a commercial juggernaut. Since then, the Grammy-winning Buena Vista Social Club, recorded at Havana's Egrem Studio by guitarist Ry Cooder, has sold over eight million copies, making it the best-selling world music album ever, and the 'Buena Vista Social Club Presents' imprimatur has come ... Nina de Fuego(more) »rank: 738by: Concha Buika
Our review: :Buika unveils herself on the cover and bears all on her third album,Niña de Fuego. Buika does away with the costumes that usuallydecorate album covers, stripping away all but her feelings. When she moved to Madrid and recorded her first album, she showedthe never-ending possibility of her skills as a singer. With her secondalbum,Mi Niña Lola, produced by Javier Limón, she got thecredibility, the recognition, the awards, the performances, and theexciting reviews that left people breathless. Her career cannot be summarized in a sentence but when she opens hermouth you realize there is no singer like her.Buika now arrives with her third album, Niña ... Rodrigo y Gabriela (with Bonus DVD)(more) »rank: 632by: Rodrigo y Gabriela
Our review:Album Description:The sleeve photo of a crocodile's eye with a faint image of Rodrigo and Gabriela superimposed, suits the artists' desire for something which didn't shout 'Mexican guitarists' or 'Couples.' 'It reminded us of Tamacun, the famous Mexican eccentric who is in Ixtapa where we lived for a while'. Tamacun -'Tamacun's message is to teach kids to respect nature.' He handles crocodiles, and tourists come to photograph him. Diablo Rojo - Inspired by a wild rollercoaster called 'Red Devil' at a theme park in Copenhagen, Denmark. Three rides in a row, each. Viking Man - Another Danish inspired piece. The Viking Man was ... Detail |

Buena Vista Social Club(more) »rank: 777by: Ry Cooder, Ibrahim Ferrar, Ruben Gonzalez, Compay Segundo, Omara Portuondo
Our review: essential recording:Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on 'El Cuarto de Tula' is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from 'Stormy Weather' and some very distinct parallels ... Live in Japan(more) »rank: 1069by: Rodrigo y Gabriela
Our review:Album Description:Two CD set. Rodrigo (Sanchez) and Gabriela (Quintero) are two fast-fingered, Dublin-based, Mexicans with a unique sound created on acoustic guitars. Their music is difficult to define, straddling both World and Rock, and often imbued with timeless Hispano classical influences. The fire in it comes from their life-long passion for Metal music. Rodrigo y Gabriela beat both the Arctic Monkeys and Johnny Cash to #1 in the Irish charts upon its orginal release in Europe. Rodridgo Y Gabriela are one of the world's most celebrated and captivating touring and live acts having sold out classic venues such as The Roundhouse and Shepard's ... Detail |
Getz/Gilberto(more) »rank: 1020by: Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto
Our review: essential recording:Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remains the only jazz album to reach number one in the pop charts. In fact, the story goes that Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto since the company did not want to compete with its own hit; it was a good thing he did. Getz/Gilberto, which featured composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, not only ... Detail |

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Greatest Hits(more) »rank: 2605by: Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66
Our review: :A bridge between bossa nova and 1960s pop, Sergio Mendes' music was easy listening, vaguely psychedelic pop, light jazz, and bossa nova all rolled into one. Mendes and Brasil '66 (which featured Mendes on keyboards and a revolving cast of two female vocalists, bass, guitar, drums and percussion) had a number of hits from the mid-'60s to the early-1970s that are included here. Getting his professional start playing and arranging for Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, Mendes typically filled out his proper albums with updated versions of popular songs written by the Brazilian masters as well as some of his own tunes ... Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits(more) »rank: 2342by: Vince Guaraldi Trio
Our review: :Recognizing that the holiday season really begins at Halloween (and, in some quarters, doesn't end until the Super Bowl), Vince Guaraldi and his record company have wisely assembled the hummable themes from various Charlie Brown TV specials. What we have here is the album's ability to communicate the playful irony and loopy, lovable characters that people Charles Schultz's 'Peanuts' comic strip every week. Though only one actual Christmas tune is included--'Christmas Time Is Here,' in both the vocal and instrumental versions--kids from ages 1 to 92 will still appreciate the 'Great Pumpkin Waltz,' the 'Thanksgiving Theme,' oddities such as 'Heartburn Waltz' and 'Joe ...
