A Very Special Acoustic Christmas(more) »rank: 1188by: Various Artists
Our review: :Every year since 1987, there's been A Very Special Christmas record of one sort or another, the proceeds of which go to the Special Olympics. This year's A Very Special Acoustic Christmas is as great as any previous year's efforts, even though it's deliciously unplugged. Country music superstars like Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, and Wynonna are balanced by such legendary country and bluegrass figures as Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs, and Willie Nelson (doing a version of Charles Brown's 'Please Come Home for Christmas' that's almost as haunting as Brown's). Throw in the father of newgrass Sam Bush's sparkling 'Let it Snow! ... Detail |

Neck and Neck(more) »rank: 5652by: Chet Atkins, Mark Knopfler
Our review: :Two generations of guitarists merge on this cleverly-titled album, with former Dire Straits virtuoso Mark Knopfler taking time off from scoring movies to join Chet Atkins, one of the fathers of electric guitar pickin'. And there's some mighty fine country pickin' on display here, with the duo joined by some of Nashville's all-time finest players, including the late, great Floyd Cramer, Mark O'Connor, Larry Londin, Vince Gill, and Steve Wariner. The material ranges from choice country covers (Doc Watson's 'Poor Boy Blues,' Patsy Cline's 'Sweet Dreams') to rock 'n' roll ('Yakety Ax,' a take on Boots Randolph's 'Yakety Sax'), jazz (Django Reinhardt's 'Tears'), ... Heartland: An Appalachian Anthology(more) »rank: 5405from: Sony
Our review: :The likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Joshua Bell, and Mark O'Connor can be heard on Heartland, a compilation featuring the best tracks from Sony's ongoing Appalachian-themed series of CDs. Individually, these folk and classical stars have little in common, but when they meet to play these new bluegrass-meets-chamber-music arrangements, the results are pure magic. It's hard to pinpoint these Americana-tinged tunes--they could fit in either Carnegie Hall or a grange hall--but they're all great; this is as much Aaron Copland's version of roots music as it is Bill Monroe's. Whether on fast-and-furious breakdowns such as 'Death by Triple Fiddle' or ... Detail |

Stratosphere Boogie: The Flaming guitars Of Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant(more) »rank: 17612by: Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant
Our review: :These 16 sides were selected from the more than 50 that guitarist Bryant and pedal steel player West cut in Los Angeles between 1951 and 1956, when they were also most in demand as country--and occasionally pop--session men. Forty years later, these are still considered the hottest, most fully realized, most musical instrumentals in the history of country. West's slashing, muscular steel lines send out sparks, while Bryant's bop-influenced, breakneck guitar cuts clean as a scalpel. Using the guitar-steel pairings of Western swing as a jumping-off point, these guys created a jazzy body of work that many guitarists are still trying to decipher. ... Detail |
