Don't Back Down(more) »rank: 122637by: The Queers
Our review:Album Description:Yeah, another QUEERS reissue! While THE QUEERS explore whole new areas of pop harmonies that were only hinted at on previous records (there's even a 60s style Farfisa organ on 'Janelle, Janelle' and 'Punk Rock Girls'), they definitely haven't said goodbye to their own style of bare bones, in your face punk rock, as evidenced by such cute little ditties as 'I'm Okay, You're Fucked' and 'Brush Your Teeth'. 'Don't Back Down' features 14 songs, which range from butt-slamming classic punk rock to exquisitely beautiful pop. Detail |
A Day Late and a Dollar Short(more) »rank: 126967by: The Queers
Our review:Album Description:Here is the seventh and final reissue from THE QUEERS. 'A Day Late...' collects thirty-four songs culled from old singles, EPs and compilation tracks. Straight from the mouth of Joe Queer himself: 'It's really cool that all the old Queers songs have finally been compiled onto one release cause it's always been the way I hoped it would be. Of course that was back in '83, but things always did take a little longer than expected when the Queers were involved.' Detail |

The Smell of Our Own(more) »rank: 174657by: The Hidden Cameras
Our review: :The Hidden Cameras, like the Polyphonic Spree, specialize in swooning pop. The songs on HC's debut album revolve around communal living, gay love, and religious imagery. Singer/guitarist Joel Gibb's 15-member band (some of whom don little more than balaclavas when playing live) overcome possible charges that they're a novelty act thanks to Gibb’s knack of creating expansive, uplifting songs layered with flute, harp, trombone, and sleigh bells. 'Day is Dawning' begins as a gently strummed paean to creation and slowly builds into a lilting, choral-tinged thing of loveliness. 'Boys of Melody' is similarly beguiling, as Gibb gazes 'far out at sea bathed in ... Detail |
Play It Cool(more) »rank: 32319by: Lea DeLaria
Our review: :Standup comedian, actress, and singer Lea DeLaria presents a less confrontational image here than she did on 1994's Bulldyke in a China Shop, adopting the role of seductive, witty, confident, and heterosexual jazz chanteuse to perfection. Her voice ranges from little-girl-lost innocence to harder-edged tones, both suited to the opening 'The Ballad of Sweeney Todd.' With stylings from Billie Holiday to Judy Garland, 'I've Got Your Number' heads straight for the heart of 1950s big-band balladry, improvised scat vocals proving DeLaria can swing with the best. 'Cool' is anything but, the accompaniment understated, that voice dripping with the promise of sex. In 'With ... Detail |
