Make Yourself(more) »rank: 883by: Incubus
Our review:Album Description:Includes an enhanced component. :Young, aggro, and from Los Angeles--it's tempting to put Incubus in the already crowded category populated by Korn, System of a Down, and their other loud and heavy brethren. But that would sell Incubus short, because Make Yourself, the quintet's sophomore album, is a strong progression beyond their 1997 debut, S.C.I.E.N.C.E.. More like Faith No More than Limp Bizkit, Incubus still have that teen-mosh appeal, though the songwriting and instrumentation on Make Yourself is diverse and thoughtful, both lyrically and musically. 'Drive' is an easygoing, slightly trippy acoustic-based outing, while oddball scratching (courtesy of DJ Chris Kilmore) and ... Detail |
Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart (2 CD)(more) »rank: 619by: Rachael Yamagata
Our review: :Rachael Yamagata has hardly been idle since her acclaimed 2004 full-length debut, Happenstance, and its Adult Top 40 hit 'Worn Me Down.' So for her Warner Bros. premiere, the singer-songwriter-pianist with the sultry voice unveils a double disc set: Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart. Produced largely by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, The Faint), and also John Alagia (John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band, Happenstance), Elephants is darker and more vulnerable while the more guitar-driven Teeth Sinking Into Heart is grittier and more defiantly cynical. Together, they reveal the two sides of one of today's most entrancing artists. Detail |

Earth Wind & Fire: Greatest Hits(more) »rank: 918by: Wind & Fire Earth
Our review: essential recording:It's the most complete single-disc collection of EWF chart rockers, and Greatest Hits' splendid remastering makes one of the major exponents of '70s funk positivity sound sparkling. From the driving 'Shining Star' to the syncopated mastery of 'September' and 'Boogie Wonderland' to the slow-jam heaven of 'After the Love Is Gone,' this is a reminder of what made the group so special. --Rickey Wright Detail |

Songs in the Key of Life(more) »rank: 1185by: Stevie Wonder
Our review:Album Description:Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. Universal. 2006. essential recording:Songs in the Key of Life (1976) was the highest high point of Stevie Wonder's career. More sprawling than Innervisions and Talking Book, this two-LP-plus-EP was also less of a consistent stunner than either of those masterworks. That Songs retains an enormous amount of visionary relevance, though, is demonstrated not only in Coolio's borrowing of 'Pastime Paradise' as a template for 'Gangsta's Paradise,' but in the cold-as-ice synthesized string quartet of 'Village Ghetto Land.' This is Stevie, so naturally that cut's anger is balanced ... Detail |

Stadium Arcadium(more) »rank: 868by: Red Hot Chili Peppers
Our review:Album Description:Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers calls the band’s first new album in four years, Stadium Arcadium, the most-anticipated album of the spring, 'the best thing that we’ve ever done…. There’s this weird kind of sublime, subliminal undercurrent that is suggestive, in a spirited way, of our earliest records.' Exuding all the passion, energy and funked-up rock that have made the Red Hot Chili Peppers one of the most popular bands in history, the 2-CD Stadium Arcadium, simply put, will knock your socks off. :Four-year career hiatuses followed by sprawling double-albums could spell trouble for a band of the Chili ... Off the Wall(more) »rank: 1335by: Michael Jackson
Our review: essential recording:Given the pace of Michael Jackson's post-Thriller release schedule, it's striking that Off the Wall appeared between two albums with his brothers, Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980), on which the twentysomething phenomenon was also fully engaged. Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, Off the Wall redefined how much Michael might do. Tracks like 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough,' 'Rock with You,' the title cut (all Top 10 singles), and 'Burn this Disco Out' not only consolidated his dance-floor power, but showed just how soulful and varied his vocals could get on uptempo material. Artistic role models like James ... Detail |

Number Ones(more) »rank: 1325by: Michael Jackson
Our review: :Like the Beatles and Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson is one of the handful of artists that can release an album of their number one singles. Number Ones includes his solo chart toppers in the UK and abroad from the period beginning with his Off the Wall album right up to the new song 'One More Chance', a collaboration with R Kelly. The remaining 17 songs on the album are all classics drawn from the disco-soul Off the Wall, the funky Thriller, the good Bad, the safe Dangerous, the semi-best-of History and the weak Invincible. Regardless of whether the bulk of Number Ones has ... Detail |
