Monkey Business(more) »rank: 3109by: Black Eyed Peas
Our review: :As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business’s high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake’s contribution to the massive 'Where Is the Love' breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a ... Detail |
Elephunk(more) »rank: 5131by: Black Eyed Peas
Our review:Album Description:Includes the bonus track Something For That Us. :Black Eyed Peas have at times been accused of sounding too Tribe for their own good, but this time out Will.i.am and crew have consciously expanded their horizons. Problem is, perhaps they've tried too hard. As the title suggests, Elephunk borrows from every single element of funk known to man and (with the exception of the one straight-out rock & roll track, 'Anxiety') tries to cram them all into a semi-hip-hop format. While such willingness to experiment is admirable, in this ... Detail |

Behind the Front(more) »rank: 20373by: Black Eyed Peas
Our review: :The Black Eyed Peas' debut, Behind the Front, may sound thoroughly familiar: like A Tribe Called Quest, they sprout positive, deftly delivered lyrics out of their light jazz, R&B, and funk tracks; like the Roots, this multi-ethnic outfit's three MCs drop science in front of a live band that builds its grooves organically; and at their best, such as on the pop and reggae-flavored 'Karma,' the group can out-Fugee the Fugees. For some reason, though, the mostly mild, largely scratchless and sample-free record can--at times--be downright tepid. But for the ... Detail |
Bridging the Gap(more) »rank: 80688by: Black Eyed Peas
Our review: :Once upon a time, hip-hop was about having a good time and (brace yourselves) getting down! The Black Eyed Peas are bringing that mentality back to the future. They reinvigorated blasé dance floors and seduced discriminating heads with their debut, Behind the Front, and they do it again on Bridging the Gap. In the open-minded old-school tradition of producers like Afrika Bambaataa, the album is diverse and delicious, a grab bag of influences from reggae to drum & bass and beyond. Songs like 'BEP Empire,' produced by Gang Starr's notorious ... Detail |
